Map: The continental United States is divided into 19 freshwater mussel faunal provinces based primarily on the work of Haag (2009). Tap on a Province to see how many species are known to occur there. Select Results (top right) to display pictures of all species that occur in the Province. There are more pictures than species for each province due to males and females of some species appearing markedly different (termed sexual dimorphism). Select Identify by Characteristics to reduce the number of potential species for an identification. Identify: Select identify to use a suite of primary shell characters to determine a species of interest from either the entire United States or a selected province. Help windows can be accessed by clicking ? that are provided after most questions to illustrate the character options. The user should select as many character options as possible. Selecting and answering more options reduces the number of species and available options until a smaller final group of mussels is reached to choose from. The character options menu changes to a blue color when the option is visited in order to help keep track of which options have been used. Note that the list of character options can be hidden by swiping left, and shown again by swiping right. Home: Click "Home" at any time to return to the front page of the app Search: To view a picture of a species, select Search and then the species name (either scientific name or common name). Taxa can be searched by using either the common or scientific names. They are arranged alphabetically by scientific name. |
